Jean-Yves Meunier is nineteen. He has grown up in a Paris suburb and is on a student placement in England, where he is expecting to work in a market garden. Brian’s decrepit polytunnel contains a few ailing strawberry plants. He is dispatched with Brian’s brother, brash Lewis, to work on a building site, and is made to help out in their mother’s B & B. On one occasion, the family turn undertakers. Youth Opportunities, the placement organisers, refuse to offer him an alternative. Meanwhile, in a summer romance with single mum, Tammy, and while befriending her uncle, his sexuality is challenged.
This novel is about experience abroad, language, cultural difference, mistakes made while under pressure, understanding sexuality and an energetic young man’s desire to pursue his career dreams.
A sequel is being planned.
